Situated in a sprawling township extending upto 743 acres, in the suburbs of Kolkata in West Bengal, is the Uttarpara plant of Hindustan Motors Limited(HML). This plant has the distinction of being the manufacturer of India’s first indigenous car- the Ambassador, tailor made for Indian roads.
Besides the Ambassador in the passenger car segment, the Uttarpara plant also manufactures the Contessa and has diversified into the production of auto components, auto-parts and multi utility vehicles like the Trekker, Pushpak and Porter.
This plant is equipped with a refurbished paint shop and a dedicated forging and foundry unit. The manufacturing technologies in this plant have been upgraded to meet present day needs. The Uttarpara Plant has so far rolled out 800,000 Passenger Cars (Ambassador & Contessa), 25,000 Utility Vehicles (Trekker diesel) and 86,000 Commercial Vehicles. HML's Uttarpara products are sold through a network of over 130 dealers and are further supported by a nation-wide service network and 55 exclusive spare part dealers.
